Simple Taste of Jamaica

by Deshian Garricks

A trip to St Catherine’s, Jamaica was one of unfortunate circumstances. The passing of an uncle turns a time of mourning into a time of celebration. It is a time when the family sets aside their differences and come together. Several days ahead is preparation gathering liquor, butchering chickens and goats are in transition. A collective movement amongst the family. For that I will forever be grateful for the experience shared with everyone. I’m intrigued at the settled destinations (Bermuda, England, New York, Jamaica, Virginia) of cousins, uncles, aunt, and extended family. Learning about my family background and culture has made my brain crave more.

The food was delicious, at least what was homemade. I was treated to the store-bought stuff which did fall short on overall taste. The atmosphere and company within the experience did make up for it. Now the jerk chicken my cousin made had me ready to book another flight back after returning. Aww, penetration of smokey flavors into sizzling meat on the barrel grill. The constant turning and drenching with Red Strip beer give it added juiciness. It was like my own little piece of heaven. Getting the seasoning too penetrate in a short amount of time. All while creating this extremely flavorful juicy piece of meat.

Original Jamaica Mountain Peak Instant Coffee which is caffeinated. Its created from Jamaican coffee beans. Although I generally do not prefer coffee, I found this one satisfactory. It has a medium roast level. There is no powdery backfire. The taste is strong, yet subtle and only needs an addition of hot water. It is even better when adding sugar and original almond milk into the equation.

Pearl Brand Islands Foods Pineapple Scotch Bonnet Pepper Jelly is manufactured in Kingston, Jamaica. I found a food joy right in this jelly. So much so it has me thinking of creating my own. It is sweet, tangy, yet has a spicy taste that give a slight kick to your taste buds. Ingredient can’t get any simpler than water, sugar, scotch bonnet pepper, sweet peppers, citric acid, pectin, and pineapples. There is no artificial flavoring or preservatives included in this tropical treat. Great as sauce or glaze on chicken, fish, pork, and vegetables.

This Jamaican Buccaneer Rum Cake was delicious. My daughter got it for me at the Norman Manley International Airport shop on our way home from Jamaica. It reminded me of a Twinkie texture and all. There just happen to be no cream in the middle. When you open the packaging you get a potent scent of rum that packs a punch to the nose. This will definitely pair well with a cup of coffee (regular or spiked).

Caribbean Choice Chicken Vienna Sausages Hot and Spicy has a slight kick to heat up your palate. It carries a flavorful spicy chicken taste. The blend of spices and seasonings ensures a consistent taste in every bite. It’s certainly an ideal choice for those who enjoy a convenient delicious ready-to-eat foods straight out of the can. Great to carry on outdoor trips, eaten as breakfast, a quick snack, or enjoy as an appetizers. It can be an addition to any dish as a protein.

Excelsior Water Crackers Jamaica’s Favorite is one of my many choices to snack on. It is a staple pairing ingredient in the Jamaican diet. It’s like I eat one and cannot stop. A wood burning brick oven was utilized to create an intriguing taste with a special crunchy “toughness. They happen to be originally produced at #2 church St. Kingston in 1911. This product is manufactured by The Jamaican Biscuit Co. Ltd, 205 Spanish Town Road, Kingston 11, Jamaica, West Indies. Once you eat one you will keep eating them as if you were drinking water. It is great with a cup of coffee or tea, also a good addition to meat and cheese platter for versatility. Enjoy water crackers with a glass of wine and cheese. Or pair it with corned beef, sardines, salted fish, meat, or have it solo.

Jamaican Ti-gaz Crunchy Cheddar Cheese snack are airy, cheesy, and crunchy. They’re shaped like tiger claws and are corn based. I really enjoy this snack since they remind me of cheese doodles. If you have little ones and want to give them a soft snack try out Ti-gaz Cheddar Cheese snack. They come in nice sizable sharable bags. Just make sure to have some water or liquids around to wash down all that cheesiness.

Perhaps on your way there or back you will try a few of Jamaica’s simple pleasures. When I find tasty food, I have to share it. Share your food products originated and produced in Jamaica.
