What Are Cinnamon Leaves?
Cinnamon leaves come from the tropical tree (Cinnamomum verum or Cinnamomum zeylanicum) belonging to the Lauraceae family. Its counterpart cinnamon bark and cinnamon powder are more commonly known of and used medicinally, especially in the United States. In the Caribbean, the leaves are more commonly used to flavor various foods. Its use dates back to 2,000 B.C.E. (4,024 years ago) but yet its precise origin is unknown.
Cultivation
Cinnamon leaves are grown in many areas of my parent’s homeland Jamaica such as St James Trelawny.
The thin oval-shaped tapered point leaf features a parallel vein structure. They will turn from red (young leaves) to deep green (mature leaves). The leaves are hand-picked from branches of the cinnamon tree. The leaves are then laid out under the sun to be dried. The dried hand-picked leaves are placed in a vacuum seal bag.
The leaves produce a taste that is faintly sweeter on the palate. It adds a complex cinnamon herbal fragrance.
Medicinal
Studies have proven oil from the cinnamon leaves plays a major role in reducing or preventing certain cancers, diabetes, and inflammation. It contains antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. It is also an antiseptic, reduces pain, and increases libido. It contains chemical compounds such as cinnamaldehyde (1% to 5% compounds that produce its flavor and odor), cinnamic acid (anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties; produce fragrance), cinnamate (fragrance agents), and eugenol (70% to 95% phenolic molecule compound).

Cinnamon Leave Tea
Ingredients
- 2 cinnamon leaves
- 8 fluid ounces water
- honey, sugar, sweetener as needed (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse cinnamon leaves.
- Place them in a small pot with water on low heat and allow to simmer for 3 minutes.
- Remove leaves and strain tea into a hot-proof cup. Enjoy with your preferred sweetener or just as it is.
Pairing
Due to the more subtle spiced notes, it would be a good seasoning for meats such as chicken, lamb, and pork. Allspice, black pepper, and green cardamon work well with cinnamon leaves. Coconut milk is a primary liquid that brings out the highlighted notes of the cinnamon leaves.
